THE BRIEF
Create an animated intro for a YouTube show about dating and relationships.
I was given a voiceover and the idea behind the show, but no visual references.
THE CHALLENGE
What does a universally recognisable image of romance look like?
I started with Apollo and Venus — classical symbols of beauty and attraction — but eventually turned to something more playful and familiar: Barbie and Ken.
THE VISUAL LANGUAGE
The retro romance aesthetic came from the TV shows I grew up watching — a little nostalgia from my generation.
The video game idea came from modern dating apps. Swiping through profiles and choosing potential partners already feels like playing a game.
So I put Barbie and Ken into a retro game world, where they have to pass a series of playful challenges to find each other.
FROM AUDIO TO IMAGE
The voiceover became the backbone of the intro. I broke it into smaller parts, found a visual idea for each and connected the scenes through animation.
